Synopsis

Based on the story of widows’ village in Dongshan island in Fujian, the play tells us a story in an offshore island in the summer of 1949. Long before, Xu Shuping, a servant girl in Qiu family, married into an offshore island, her husband and the other young men in the island were all compelled to conscription. The small island became a ‘widows’ village’ without young men. Shuping and other women in the island swore that they would support their mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law, running a family for their husbands. All the women spent 40 years in praying to the sea god, hoping their husbands would come home soon. Their days without love passed, which was filled with endless wait and expectation, hope and disappointment, temptation and persistence, miracle and madness. The family letters transferred across the straits formed a tied of kinship, unfolding every legend about family and love.
