Synopsis

In the early Republican era, the Yan Family, who lived in Wuzhen, a typical picturesque Chinese Jiangnan town, had run the biggest restaurant called Fuhai. However, the family came down in the world because of poor management. Yan Chengwen, the eldest son of the Yen family had a crush on Cheng Xiuru, a deaf and dumb girl. But Cheng Xiuru married Yan Chengwu whom she loved. Yan Chengwen held the grudge in his heart and planned to frame Chengwu’s family, which made Cheng Xiuru become a beggar from the rich mistress. Although she was born a deaf-mute, Cheng Xiuru was open-minded and persistent. She was loyal to her lost husband and loved her deaf and dumb daughter very much. In order to survive, she worked in a tofu shop and got the essence of making tofu. Finally, she created a vegetable dish with tofu.
